Most light commercial treadmills run on the same motor as a home model
DC motors are common at the lower end of the commercial market, and they work fine for a household. But under all-day, multi-user traffic in a university rec center or a boutique gym, the constant starting, stopping, and sustained running time takes a real toll.
The Star Trac 6TR steps up to a 5 HP AC drive motor, the same class of motor used in true commercial cardio equipment. AC motors deliver more consistent torque, run cooler over extended sessions, and need less maintenance than the DC motors found on entry-level treadmills.
